Hi everyone,
I am looking into buying an iPhone so I can too be one of these people with the glorius hacked versions..
I will probably post some more specific Q's soon, but basically I am trying to research the following:
- I am 99% going to wait for the 32gb version, but want to know what the wait could be
- I want to ensure it will be fine once the official iPhone service is available and my phone wont be only working as a hacked version
- I want to hack the phone myself however if someone on this forum sends them within Australia for a good price I will probably consider it
- Basically want to make sure I'm making the right decision before I fork out $500-600
I WANT ONE NOW!!!! I'm going to give my sister my 30 gb ipod video in exchange and do a deal with my birthday etc etc and somehow pull it off lol
Thanks

hey man
firstly, Welcome to iPhoneAE.
secondly to answer a few of your questions...
1. If your waiting for the 32gb you will probably be waiting a while. Apple is said to not be releasing it until the 3G model is release which is sometime during this year. when they release 3G model it will be available in Australia so no real point of importing.
2. Your imported phone will work as normal even when it is officially released in Australia. there is no difference to the hacked iPhone and the official iPhones in America besides some changes in the software coding allowing you to use it with any network. other than that the iPhone is exactly the same as official.
because the Australian release will have a different software package you will still have to unlock your imported phone each time a new update is released because it is an American model.
3. Murty is a great supplier of iPhone in Australia. an 8GB for $500 and 16GB for $600. for an extra $10 (which is for postage) Murty sends it to me so i can jailbreak, activate, unlock and australianise it so all you have to do is put you SIM in when you get it.
people choose that option because sometimes unlocking isnt always successful the first time around and people stress out when they cant figure it out themselves. ive been working with the iphone for around 9 months so im up to date with all the latest methods etc.
4. Definitely have to think about it before you buy. some people decide to wait because they want 3G but others just want it now because its so awesome. as i have said in other posts, it is cheaper to buy the iPhone for $500 then go on a prepaid carrier than wait for the iPhone to arrive here and be forced to pay around $99 a month
But its all up to you. if you have any more questions feel free to ask, heaps of people here who are happy iPhone owners and are willing to help.
cheers,
Peter

1. Thanks. I didnt really care that much. 10 GB of MP3's plus probably 1 series of Heroes, simpsons, etc at any given time is satisfactory for me!
2. Cheers. I dont mind unlocking the phone periodically. I already stuff around with firmware, etc etc. Maybe they will even be able to be 'updated' to the australian software?
3. SOLD! How long would it take hypethetically if I ordered/ paid wednessday? Can this be paid via say, Paypal ? (I have other methods but I like paypal)
4. Since I probably wont be paying the stupid charges for the slow internet via 2g/edge I will just be using it most likely with WiFi. We have WiFi in the office, and I have one in my bedroom, as well as most of my friends, so this isnt a MAJOR concern, I dont mind connecting at snail pace if I require something important.
PS: Your a legend for answering all that so precisely, and yes, I will be buying a phone ASAP from Murty - Im at work right now but I'll PM him when I get home and hopefully arrange to speak to him briefly about the ins and outs.
I have just PMed back to phirex. But unfortunately I won't be getting iPhones at this stage. It is quite a lot more involved than I originally thought and to buy directly from the apple store requires an American credit card. I'm heading over in a few months, so i'll see what easier ways there are of importing...
