I have a friend over in America who can purchase iPhones and ship them to me. I am going to get one, so if anyone else would like one, please let me know ASAP! I won't be ordering until at least after March 6th, so we will be able to find out if a new iPhone is coming or what the deal is.

I would be interested for sure. But how safe is all this in terms of the money?
Will it be updated with the 1.4 update? Do you still have to do all the other thing like patching? Number formatting etc that I have read about. (if normal guy does it) Would really like one but worried bout future updates etc and me stuffing it. Also loosing $500 bucks is something I cant afford at the moment.

And normal_guy has unlocked heaps of iPhone's for Australian use and from my understanding, they all work perfectly, and can be updated in the future when apple release more updates. (People are constantly hacking the iPhone each time updates are brought out to work with the latest update and still work with other networks.)

just a quick note on that DO NOT UPDATE AS SOON AS THE NEW FIRMWARE ARRIVES! as usually (except for 1.1.4 for some reason) apple patches the unlock crack so you have to wait till someone (usually ZiPhone gets patched relatively fast) cracks it.
Well yes a little nervous about the money thing, as things bit tight at the moment and I don't want lose it..... But I think I can overcome that. I am mostly concerned about when new updates etc come out, if I plug in my phone and block it. Also with all the things that are on the tutorials like patching, and number formatting etc, And since its not supported here yet is it hard to set up the email stuff as thats one of the things I need most. I am very keen to get one though. How long would it all take to get here if you do it?
Well I have never done it before, but I would say probably 5-8 working days. Is there anything I can do to give you peace of mind that your money is in safe hands?
Also, from my understanding, when apple bring out a new iPhone update you have to allow it to update on iTunes, it doesn't do it automatically. So you can wait until the latest update has been hacked (if thats what you want to call it) before you use it. I am not sure on the e-mail, but i'm pretty certain it works fine.
everything on the iphone works great in australia. although the support doesnt come from apple it comes from all the other people around the world who are hacking their iphones.
putting the iphone in an australian format has never been so easy with simple patches that have been released. email works great here to with just adding a few settings.
the main reason people think the iphone isnt fullyfunctional here is because when they buy it unlocked from overseas the sellers dont fully do what they should to customize.they also dont always install necessary file systems to install apps. some unlocking methods dont allow all features of the phone to function due to baseband.
if you decide to buy through murty then send to me i pretty much do everything to make it fully functional, allow you to install any community apps you want and even set up the net f you tell me who ur carrier is.
as murty said..when apple brings out an update you can choose when you want to install it.

Thanks for that normal guy. I will prob take you up on that. Heard there is a big Iphone discussion/announcement tomorrow may wait to see what that brings. If you could help that would be awesome. I am a bit dislexic when it comes to this. What do you think are the best applications out there to add on to maximise the whole thing?

damn, wish i had joined up just 1 day earlier and saw this thread, just purchased a 16gb iPhone from the US, apparently 1.1.4 unlocked (we'll see) im kinda preparing myself for the worst, trying to read up as much as i can on the unlocking process just in case it all goes pear shaped when it arrives
goodluck with the purchase, do you think you'd be doing this again anytime soon in the future? (another bulk buy/unlock)
Perhaps, I'll see what restrictions there are for buying them.
