Hi guys,

I'm headed to America next month and was hoping to buy an iPhone to use back in Australia. Is it possible to hack the current out of box firmware to work with Optus back in Australia or am I better off waiting to see if it can be done before I shell out the money?

currently it is possbile to hack all OTB iphones one way or another.

by next month 1.1.4 may have been released meaning there will be a mixture of 1.1.3 and 1.1.4 in Apple stores around America.

if you havent heard anything about release of 1.1.4 by the time your in America then its safe to go ahead and buy one.

in my opinion even if 1.1.4 is released you should still buy one over there and bring it back. way cheaper to do it yourself (16GB model only $550AUS compared to about $850 on ebay) and normally it doesnt take to long for someone to hack the firmware.

Do you lose any functionality with an unlocked iPhone? I'm assuming all phone functions would work but visual voicemail?

nope. dont lose any functions with an unlocked iPhone except visual voicemail which is exculsive to certain networks.
