Full Version: 3 reasons why Telstra will get the iPhone

Reason 1: Telstra is the only company to offer EDGE, the iPhones internet features (mainly youtube) would be useless on anything slower.

Reason 2: If Apple release iPhone 3G here then it will probly still go with Telstra a) because Telstra has the largest 3G network and b) because Telstras 3G network (NextG) is the same (HSPA on 850 MHZ) as the iPhones US provider, AT&T.

Reason 3: Telstra has Wi-Fi hotspots at Starbucks, McDonald's and numerous hotels which it could use to supply the customer with free (or cheaper) internet as it would be cheaper for Telstra if customers use these hotspots instead of the mobile network.

what do you guys think?
i gotta agree cant ague with that... plus word around the camp fire is that telstra has already signed off to it and it will be released here by the end of the month.... WOOW SHORT MONTH TOO!! Tongue
Sweeeeeeet, can't wait. i have the iPod touch and love it. the iPhone will 100X better, and should be this month, wow happy happy joy joy
well it seems I was waaaaay wrong about this :op
but all is not lost right??? I have heard wispers here and there. Does any1 think/know if telstra is gonna bite the bullet and get the iPhone, apparently there's no more revenue sharing, so what would be the hold up? It seems like every telco in aus is gonna have it except telstra.

Apparently Telstra don't want to play because Apple won't give them a green light to pre install their own Sensis application.

Talk about stupid!

Stupid on both sides IMO. I won't be getting an iPhone unless I can use it on Telstra Next-G because I live in the bush. Telstra's intransigence coupled with Apple's over-zealous "Brand Protection" equals a bum deal for Australian consumers.
This news item confirms the above: http://www.applesource.com.au/iphone/soa...865,00.htm
Rumor has it that another reason that telstra have not yet signed on with the Apple iPhone yet is Bigpond music, which telstra has on all of its Next-G mobiles. With telstra having to compete directly with the iTMS it has left a bit of a sour taste in telstra's mouth.
Telstra could use the SDK to release a Bigpond Music Store app, let customers decide where they want there music from, not to mention a sensis app, whereis app, etc. let customers decide if they want it and stop ramming down our throughts.
Apple is gonna loose out on sales cos no one in the country is gonna by a 3G iPhone with no 3G here and Telstra is gonna loose customers in the cities cos they want the iPhone

Further news which adds to the probability that we should see the iPhone on Telstra about July 22nd (my birthday!! woot!!)
From Gizmodo....

Telstra Looks More Certain To Be Releasing The iPhone 3G
Optus and Vodafone have confirmed it, Telstra's in its SDK as a compatible carrier and 3 is telling customers in store that they'll be releasing it after the July 11 Launch. The "it" in that last sentence is obviously the iPhone 3G.

But now Australian IT is reporting that Telstra will definitely be releasing the iPhone 3G, probably on July 22, with Uncle Sol likely to make an announcement as early as next week.

As Gus over at Lifehacker put it, Michael Sainsbury (who co-wrote the article) is insanely connected with people at Telstra, so there's a lot of credence to this story.

What does this mean for you? Well, if it's true, then Telstra's newtork will offer the best coverage for your iPhone, but it will almost certainly be the most expensive. If you ever need to travel to rural areas though, the big T is definitely your best choice.

Stay tuned for more info as it comes to light...
