well as most of you would know Apple is currently building the first Apple store (thats not a reseller) in southern hemisphere in Sydney and my theory (i have no evidence what so ever to back this up) is that Apple will release the iPhone around the same time as this store opens so it would be like some huge apple party, 1st store in the southern hemisphere + the long awaited iPhone.

like i said its purely a theory i thought of while trying to dig up any hints on the release. the store is looking to open late Feb so perhaps this phone aint so far away.

please post your own speculations as i am interested to here them.

it looks like it will open any where from the end of feb to the start of june... i hope sooner rather than later

Japan is about to launch and according to Apple Insider Thailand and China are currently talking to Apple about the iPhone.... not long to go till that little device is here

looks like i was wrong, and apparently unless the iPhone hits 10 million units it doesn't look like it will be here till the end of 08 early 09 according to this article

grrr this sucks for the ones(such as myself) that don't want to buy an iPhone until it is made available by the company.

I disagree. Cynically, the only reason the phone isn't here yet is because Uncle (Sam) Sol at Telstra has convinced Apple it needs to be 3G which won't be available for a long time.

I hope that isn't the case. I have outlined a few theories about how Telstra stand to gain lots of money by releasing the phone now. Basically mirroring Apple's plan to release the phone as is now and then the bleeding edgers will buy again when 3G comes out.

Not to mention, Telstra can bundle the iPhone on mobile plans and BigPond plans to access their network of wireless hotspots.

I hope Sol is reading this, because if he hasn't thought of that, he should NOW!!!

And I am also more and more convinced that the iPhone will be released when the Sydney Apple store opens. Big event, big store, big product, big press.

Plus it needs to be on the market before the recession (which we are bound to have) hits and people don't have money to buy expensive toys!

yea it would be a good idea for them to release the current version and then the 3G version from a business point of view and also with that recession that is looking more and more promising each day it would be wise to make as much as possible before we all move to card board boxes and are lighting fires with two sticks

just a little update i walked past the new Apple store on King St and it doesn't look like its going to be finished anytime in the immediate future. looking like it might be finished in June. they are still constructing the outside and i was able to peak in through the construction boards and they are still putting in the wiring and air conditioning.

if you would like me to update you all on the construction just leave me a message because i will be going past it occasionally for my own curiosity and if any one would like to be updated i'll update it into here.

It would be great to hear the news.
There's not even a rumour of an Apple store for BNE!
You would be surprised just how fast they can get a building done once the important stuff - ducting, wires etc are in place.
Most shops are just facades and suspended ceiling panels.
Plus Apple will be paying rent on an unusable building so they'll be wanting the job finished toot sweet.
Here's hoping anyway.
