I currently live in California but will be moving to Melbourne in the coming months. My wife and i both have 1st gen iPhones. We have no pressing need to upgrade to 2nd gen (3G+GPS) on the 11th but are happy to if that works out better for us.

Here's what we're seeking local opinions on:

1) 1st generation iPhones are selling in the US for $350-500US on eBay. We could sell now and buy into 3G once down under.

2) Keep our 1st generation phones. If we do this, what are our options once we move? Will we have better choices, e.g. arriving with 2 unlocked phones without contracts? Data/voice plans? Or will we be screwed because Australia doesn't "officially" support 2.5G?

So should we sell now or hold onto our 1st gen phones, and why? What do you think?
I would recommend holding onto it until it comes out and see what updates get brought out for the first gen iphone. could be some cool things that get added...

Well there'll be the 2.0 update for all iPhones (old and new). I'm not sure they'll be any 1st gen specific deals in Australia (since there's no 1st gen support at all in Australia).

What else are you thinking may be added/become available?

I'm mostly thinking that there may be some advantage to having an unlocked iPhone without contract. But i'm unfamiliar with the available data and voice support.

SELL IT if it breaks no one in Australia will be able to help. The iPhone is a region based product like the Apple TV and will only be "serviceable" back in the states. I know this as I work in the service dept for an apple reseller.
