Hi Y'all,
When an iPhone is activated on AT&T the customer uses iTunes to fill in the customer information and sign up for a new contract (or upgrade and existing phone number), what's to stop someone putting in false information and not having to pay a bill for a few months?
I'm more interested on an Australian scenario, i.e. activating over iTunes for Vodafone.
from what i know, when a customer signs up for a new contract they have to put valid credit card details to sign up then can later switch to paying without a credit card (at post office etc.).

my best guess is that either
a) you will activate your phone in the vodafone store because australia probably wont have the same system as US has set up or
b) the phone will be unlocked when its released meaning you wont have to do anything but insert the simcard when you sign up for the contact

from what i know, australian law prohibits phones being locked to just one carrier meaning when the iphone is released here it will be like every other phone that you can either go on a contract for 24 months or buy it outright.
vodafone probably wont exclusively be providing the iPhone as i was talking to an Optus person today and they informed me that ill be able to upgrade to the iPhone on my current contract when it is released.
