No. You will need to restore it to factory condition. What firmware are you on and what where you originally on?

Thanks for the reply - am about to have a friend buy a brand new 16g one from Apple in the US, then remembered about the battery situation. Anything I should be aware of before proceeding?

You would have to return it to the US. However, the battery is pretty much definetely going to last a few years at least so it is not a major issue.

Dumb question wasnt it!! By the time it needs replacing I'll want to upgrade to whatever model is available at that time!!! Thanks for the patience.

Hi guys,
I have replaced many iPhone parts, screens, batteries, speakers and even just the casings. Replacing a battery is not to complex if your technically inclined. There are some good guides at ifixit.com why let apple charge you an arm an a leg for replacement when you can pick up oem batteries for around $30-$40.
